Olympia considers locations for 3 potential dog parks

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Dog owners in Olympia could soon get three new off-leash dog parks.

One of the options is near McLane Elementary School, off Mud Bay Road, where a 6- acre piece of land could soon turn into a dog park for a city that currently has none.

Other locations Olympia city officials are considering are a 1-acre area at Evergreen Park off Cooper Point Road and a 3.5-acre piece of land at Ward Lake Park off Yelm Highway.

According to KIRO 7’s news partner at the Olympian, the city hopes to develop all three proposed sites into dog parks to avoid one being overused.

The locations were selected based on distance from residential areas and from each other.

At one time, Olympia did have a dog park, but it was shut down in 2013 because of complaints from neighbors about noise, traffic and smell.

The city wants to get as much input from the community as possible on the proposed locations and is holding an open house at Olympia City Hall Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Those who cannot attend can fill out an online survey.

There is no word yet on when a decision will be made.
