Police warning public about impersonator acting as a sheriff's deputy

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma police are warning people of a scam involving an impersonator acting as a sheriff’s deputy.

Police said they are aware of eight reported cases of the scam where the impersonator is attempting to con unsuspecting seniors to pay money to get out of court matters.

According to police, a male caller identified himself as Deputy Gregg Allen with the Sheriff’s Department.

He has left phone messages stating:

"We are trying to get ahold of [homeowners' name] about a courthouse matter. Please call back at 253-259-1649."

The impersonator then calls back a short time later directing the homeowner to buy a prepaid card in the amount of $6,500 and deliver it to a specific location. He states if the homeowner does not deliver the card immediately, a deputy will come to their home and arrest them on a warrant.

One person has delivered a card and was told he would receive a receipt the next day.

Police said people need to be aware that authorities do not contact citizens by phone to collect money.

If anyone receives a similar call or has been victimized by the scam, they are urged to call their local police agency and report it.
