WWU student fights off man during attempted kidnapping

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Western Washington University student said she escaped from a man who tried to kidnap her.

The woman was walking in the 300 block of Samish Way in Bellingham around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday when a white man with brown hair pulled up next to her in a silver SUV, the university reported.

He tried to force the student into the SUV, but she kicked and punched him and was able to escape.

She then ran to nearby friend’s house.

Bellingham police are investigating. University police have increased patrols on and around campus, the school said.

Anyone with information that could be used to identify the man in the silver SUV is asked to call Bellingham police at 360-778-8800.

University police said anyone who feels unsafe traveling across campus may call Student Cadets at 360-650-3555 and remind people to be aware of their surroundings and make sure their cellphones are fully charged.
