“It's very clear that we are in the age of politics at the speed of Donald Trump,” Washington State Republican Chairman Susan Hutchison said as she opened her news conference today.
Over the weekend, thousands of protesters hit the streets in Seattle and around the country.
Washington state’s Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced a lawsuit alleging the ban unconstitutionally favors Christians over Muslims.
“We are a country based on the rule of law. And in a courtroom, it is not the loudest voice that prevails, it's the Constitution,” Ferguson said.
Hutchison points out the travel ban is temporary in most categories and she believes the lawsuit is political.
“I think it's an attention-getting opportunity for him and a few other Democratic AG’s,” Hutchison said.
Republican Rob McKenna was the state lattorney general before Ferguson.
“The president is given a great deal of latitude, a lot of authority under our federal immigration law,” McKenna said.
McKenna noted that same law may prohibit religious discrimination, which gives Ferguson some change of winning.
“I think it's probably less than 50-50 in the long run. He might win an injunction potentially, he might win at the first level of the court," McKenna said.
