TACOMA, Wash. — A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after he went off of an overpass and crash-landed onto an interstate early Sunday in Tacoma.
A Washington State Patrol trooper told The News Tribune that a 21-year-old man drove off of State Route 509 after striking a barrier and landed onto Interstate 705, which was about 50 feet below.
The vehicle reportedly landed on its wheels, Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer told the newspaper.
The passenger, an 18-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver was also taken to a hospital.
Because the passenger was injured, the driver also faces a vehicular assault charge.
The crash caused southbound I-705 to be blocked for nearly four hours.
