One man shot dead, two men critically hurt in Kent

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

This is an unusual sight, just a few hundred yards from the Great Wall Shopping Mall.   Kent police spent more than 12 hours here outside 18118 East Valley Highway where three men were shot overnight.

The yellow markers indicate just how many bullets were fired.

"Does it make you nervous about coming here?" Rick Rinthalukay, a Tukwila restauranteur was asked. "Or do you feel fine?"

"I am now," he replied.

Kent police say they got a 911 weapons call at about 3:20 Sunday morning.  But officers could not find anything. Some 20 minutes later, a security guard came upon the gruesome scene in this strip mall.

One man was dead. Another was badly hurt. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. At about the same time, a third man was taken by private vehicle about a block away to Valley Medical Center.  He, too, was taken to Harborview.  Both men had life-threatening injuries.

In the light of this Sunday, two people walked out of one store front, escorted by Kent detectives. They would not say what police talked to them about.

But once KIRO 7 could get close enough, the shattered glass where the bullet casings once lay was obvious.

"You didn't know what happened?" Mike Rhode of South Renton was asked.

"I had no idea," he said.

Rhode said he was coming to the Vape shop.  But every business in the strip mall was closed while Kent police investigated.  And like nearly everyone we talked to, he knew nothing about the shooting until we told him.

"Would it keep you from coming to this Vape shop?" Rhode was asked.

"Definitely not," he said. "Definitely not. It's just a stone's throw away from work. So why wouldn't I come down here?"

In fact, as soon as police left the scene, many of the businesses in the strip mall opened up for the first time all day.

Kent police would not make anyone available to talk on camera, so there's no word on whether they have any leads in this case.

But more information will likely be available Monday.
