King County sergeant's journey one year after getting injured

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

It was one year ago this month that a vacation in paradise turned into a nightmare for a King County Sheriff's Office sergeant.

On June 24, 2016, Sgt. Wing Woo hit his head on the ocean floor during a family vacation in Hawaii.

On Thursday, only on KIRO 7, he spoke for the first time since that accident.

“I got injured by a rogue wave,” said Woo. “We were bodysurfing. It bent me backwards like a scorpion.”

Woo went into cardiac arrest but was revived and taken to a hospital in Maui.

About a week later, thanks to more than $100,000 raised through donations, he was on a medic flight back to Seattle.

“People who pitched in and donated, that supported me and prayed for me, I don’t know how to say thank you,” said Woo.

At one point, Woo said, the only part of his body he could move was his toe.

Now, through his medical treatments and physical therapy, he has gained enough muscle mass to stand on his own and walk a few steps at a time with help.

Woo said he misses being out on the streets and is not ready to retire due to his injuries.

He says it’s a possibility the Sheriff’s Office is considering, and a meeting to discuss that is set for Friday.

“A year from now, I kind of want to go back to work, even if it’s light duty for a while.”
