Hood Canal Bridge reopens after closure for high winds

Washington State Department of Transportation said the Hood Canal Bridge is now open to vehicles after it was closed Thursday afternoon.

The bridge reopened just before 8:30 p.m.

KIRO 7 PinPoint Meteorologist Morgan Palmer reported wind gusts are in the 20 to 30 mile per hour range for most areas. He expects it to stay windy on Thursday evening into Friday.

The bridge, which is 7,869 feet and opened in 1961, carries drivers on State Route 104, connecting the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas.

The west half was reconstructed in the early 1980s and the east half replacement was completed in 2009. Part of the bridge also sank in a February 1979 windstorm.
