Bellingham man arrested after allegedly stabbing woman, punching baby

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a woman and punching her 1-year-old baby during a dispute on Saturday in the city’s Birchwood neighborhood.

According to police, witnesses said Michael Gary Young, 25, repeatedly hit the woman in her back and chest area as she was holding the baby. When officers arrived, they said she was bleeding from a stab wound to her back believed to also be from Young.

During the investigation, officers found that the baby was developing a black eye that they said happened as Young was punching the mother.

A 5-year-old child was also present, but was unharmed, police said.

Young was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault and assault of a child.

The female victim was transported to a local emergency room and is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

Officials said both children were taken into protective custody by Bellingham Police.
