Edmonds Safeway evacuates after manager finds suspicious bag on shelf

The Safeway in Edmonds, located at 23632 Highway 99, was temporarily evacuated Saturday afternoon after a suspicious bag was found on a shelf.

EDMONDS, Wash. — A Safeway in Edmonds was temporarily evacuated Saturday afternoon after the store’s manager found a suspicious bag on a shelf, police said.

The incident happened at 2:48 p.m. at the Safeway located at 23632 Highway 99.

According to police, the manager saw a suspicious man shopping in the store. The man was acting odd while walking through the store, and then suddenly left.

The manager looked through security footage and saw the man put something on a shelf in one of the aisles. The manager found a bag hidden behind items on the shelf.

The manger decided to evacuate the store and then called 911.

A bomb squad responded to the scene and technicians determined that the bag was not an explosive device.

The bag contained items that the man was attempting to steal from the store. It is unknown why the man hid the items on the shelf.

Police described the man as white and wearing a blue or green hat.

There were no injuries reported.

Authorities will continue to investigate the incident.
