TACOMA, Wash, — A woman scuba diving near Les Davis pier in Tacoma is missing and believed to have drowned.

The woman, about 50 years old, was seen shouting for help from the surface just after one Wednesday afternoon. She then sank and vanished.

Two women having lunch along the waterfront saw the woman and called 911. Rescue divers with Tacoma police and the Pierce County Sheriff's Department began a search. After more than an hour they confirmed the rescue had become an effort to recover the woman's body.

The missing diver was with seven other people diving the popular artificial reef near the waterfront. Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said the other divers thought the woman was with them when they surfaced, but quickly determined only seven people had returned to shore instead of eight.

The missing woman was described as a newly certified diver with little experience underwater.
