BELLEVUE, Wash. — A bobcat was spotted Monday morning near Newport Heights Elementary School in Bellevue.

The school is located at 5225 119th Avenue Southeast.

The bobcat was seen by a staff member near the intersection of Southeast 52nd Street and 119th Avenue Southeast.

The Bellevue Police Department and the Department of Fish and Wildlife were notified.

Parents of Newport Heights students received a recorded message about the animal, and the principal sent out the following message:

"This morning at approximately 7AM a staff member reported a bobcat sighting in the area.  We immediately notified the local Department of Fish & Wildlife, Bellevue Police Department and sent a school messenger message to families to pay additional attention during drop off this morning."

"As you know our school is located near forested areas and greenbelts that are home to wildlife.  It is common for the wildlife to become accustomed to humans when their homes are close to natural habitats.  In cases such as these, it is not uncommon to see wildlife during the day.  If you happen to see wildlife, continue what you are doing unless the wildlife is behaving in an odd manor or acting aggressively.  Should you have any questions, or if you observe aggressive behavior in local wildlife, please contact the local Department of Fish & Wildlife at 425-775-1311."
