SEATTLE — Former OL Reign and U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo has been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Solo is one of three individuals elected to the hall of fame as part of the class of 2022.

Solo’s eligibility for the hall of fame was based on her 202 appearances for the U.S. Women’s National Team. She was the goalkeeper for the team for more than a decade and won two Olympic gold medals and a FIFA Women’s World Cup championship.

Solo grew up in Washington and played soccer at Richland High School and the University of Washington before she started her professional career.

Solo signed with the Seattle Sounders Women in 2012, but only appeared in three matches for the team, as she was with the national team preparing for the Olympic Games.

In 2013, Solo joined OL Reign, then called Seattle Reign FC, as one of three members from the United States Women’s National Team allocated to the Reign for its inaugural season.

Solo’s contract with U.S. Soccer was terminated in 2016 after she made critical comments about an opposing team following the Americans’ elimination from the Rio Olympics in the quarterfinals.

Solo ended her career with the Reign shortly after, playing eight games with the team that year.

Inductees to the National Soccer Hall of Fame are selected by a committee comprising hall of fame members, members of the media, historians, and coaches and administrators with U.S. Soccer.

The 2022 Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
