WEST RICHLAND, Wash. — A Tri-Cities policeman says he was denied service at a convenience store because he's a cop.
KEPR TV reports West Richland police officer Duane Olsen was off-duty and in plain clothing when he approached the counter of a Circle K to check out. The clerk asked if he was an officer.
When he said yes, the clerk slid his items aside and said she wouldn't serve police.
The officer's wife posted about it on Facebook Tuesday, and it created an uproar -- one that the West Richland department is downplaying.
West Richland Police Capt. Ben Majetich held a news conference Wednesday afternoon about the incident.
"We do not believe this is reflective on Circle K or any of its businesses. We've had a great relationship with this store and all its employees. This happened to be one employee who was at the time very upset and emotional over a previous incident with police two days prior and it just so happened she took it out on this particular officer," said Capt. Ben Majetich during the press conference.
Police said the clerk had been arrested for warrants a few days before the incident.
Circle K apologized:
"This employee's behavior in no way reflects Circle K's attitude toward this well-respected and hardworking police force. It is our privilege and pleasure to serve them and they, as well as patrons, are always welcome at our stores."
