Trump administration considers executive actions as stimulus talks stall again

The Trump administration is considering executive actions to implement unemployment benefits and provide help for the airline industry, according to a report from The Washington Post.

The Post, citing two Trump administration members who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reported that President Donald Trump could be considering the actions to help the airlines and reinstate federal unemployment benefits after negotiations between Democrats and Republicans on another stimulus plan have stalled.

Other plans being considered are allocating additional money for school vouchers, and changing the payroll tax deferral Trump instituted to make it more effective, the Post reported.

Last month, Trump signed executive actions that would discourage evictions, restore unemployment benefits at $300 a week and defer payroll tax payments and student loans through the end of the year.

A Republican “skinny” relief bill was introduced, voted on and voted down this week that would have provided unemployment benefits and liability protection for businesses, government agencies and schools as they begin to reopen. The bill came after a summer of stalled negotiations between Democrats in the House and the Republican-majority Senate.

Last week, Trump said he was looking at the possibility of using $300 billion in unused coronavirus relief funds to pay for a second $1,200 stimulus check that would be sent to 180 million Americans.

“We have $300 billion in an account that we didn’t use. I would be willing to release it, subject to Congress, and use that as stimulus money and it would go right to the American people,” Trump said last week at a press briefing.
