The accident occurred as the four men and one woman were returning in a van after training at Camp Billy Machen in Niland, Navy officials said in a news release.

The name of the deceased sailor is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, according to the release. Two of the injured sailors were in critical condition and two others were in stable condition, Navy officials said. Their names are also being withheld in accordance with Navy policy.

According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Travis Garrow, a Chevrolet Express van was traveling west on Interstate 8 toward San Diego when it veered off the highway shortly before 10 a.m. PDT, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The van struck a boulder and overturned, according to KSWB-TV.

A sailor seated in the middle rear of the van died at the scene, Garrow told the Union-Tribune.

The sailors were assigned to West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare units, the Navy said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
