MIAMI — A man who allegedly sold bleach as a COVID-19 cure has been extradited back to the United States from Colombia.
According to court records obtained by The Associated Press, Mark Grenon, 64, appeared in front of a Miami federal court on Thursday for his initial court appearance after he was recently extradited back the U.S. Last year, Grenon and his three adult sons were charged with one count each for conspiracy to commit fraud and two counts each for criminal contempt.
The AP said that Grenon is an archbishop at the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing located in Bradenton, Florida. Allegedly the church made, promoted and sold chlorine dioxide they called the “Miracle MIneral Solution,” officials told the AP. The Grenons had claimed that the solution could cure illnesses like cancer, autism, malaria and COVID-19.
A federal judge in Miami ordered the church to stop selling chlorine dioxide in 2020, according to the AP. Grenon allegedly ignored the order and was arrested months later in Colombia.
The Food and Drug Administration, according to the AP, said the solution is ingested it becomes a bleach that are used for “treating textiles, industrial water, pulp and paper.” When ingested, the solution is like drinking bleach and can be deadly.
No further information has been released.
