According to the South Bend Tribune, someone in a blue van left the child, later identified as 3-year-old Kardie Rose Weathersby, in the hospital’s emergency room about 1 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said. The girl was severely injured and not breathing, the newspaper reported, citing scanner traffic.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said doctors pronounced the toddler dead on Thursday, WSBT reported. Medical examiners will perform an autopsy on the girl Monday in Fort Wayne, authorities said.
