The Associated Press says the unidentified boy was found in a suitcase in a heavily wooded area of southern Indiana by a mushroom hunter in April and was laid to rest Wednesday at a cemetery in Salem. WLWT says about a month after the boy was found, he still has not been identified.

Community members gathered at the funeral home to mourn him. His casket, the AP says, was gray and covered with a floral arrangement and stuffed animals. The funeral was able to happen thanks to donations from residents and businesses, according to what Todd Murphy, the chaplain for Washington County Sheriff’s Office told the AP.

The boy’s body was found inside a large suitcase with a Las Vegas design on it. Investigators, according to the AP, believed the boy was Black, about 5 years old, and died a week before he was found.

The autopsy report released by the Indiana State Police last week said the boy died from an “electrolyte imbalance” and that this was likely due to gastroenteritis, or vomiting and diarrhea from dehydration. The AP says, investigators also believe the boy was alive when he was placed into the suitcase. He was clothed and clean.

Anyone with information on the child’s identity can call the Indiana State Police tip line at 888-437-6432.
