Fox buys rights to Gumby, will ‘reimagine’ beloved clay character franchise

Fox hopes to see green after acquiring the rights to the Gumby character.

Fox Entertainment announced Tuesday that it acquired the Gumby franchise from the estate of Joseph Clokey, son of Gumby creator Art Clokey, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The deal covers the iconic green claymation character, his faithful horse Pokey, and all of the characters from Clokey’s animation portfolio, the website reported.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fox Entertainment said it plans to “reimagine” the Gumby franchise for a new generation of viewers and is already developing live-action and animated content, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox will also showcase classic Gumby episodes on its Tubi streaming service and develop products based on Gumby and his friends, including non fungible tokens, the website reported.

The Gumby Show” appeared in 91 episodes from 1956 to 1969, according to IMDb.com. Art Clokey directed all of the episodes and was the writer in 90 of them; Gloria Clokey wrote the other episode.

The Gumby Movie” was a feature film in 1995.

“Competition for globally recognized intellectual property is fierce.
