SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A dog was rescued Thursday after being found buried alive in a California field.
The San Bernardino Animal Services Department said they were called around 9 a.m. about a dog in distress, KTLA reported.
Responding officers could hear the dog’s whimpers and tracked the black-and-white terrier mix to a field where it was found buried up to its neck. The dog is believed to be about 1 year old.
Officers dug out the dog and took him to a veterinarian for treatment. The dog had dust and dirt in his lungs. He was given fluids and anitbiotics.
The dog did not have any tags and was not microchipped. His medical costs were covered by a San Manuel Band of Mission Indians grant.
Animal officials believe this is an example of intentional animal cruelty. Authorities are asking for help to find the dog’s owners and for more details about how he ended up in the field.
“While he is not out of the woods, we have a team of veterinary specialists working to save him and are hopeful for his recovery,” officials said.
Officers heard the dog’s whimpers and found a small black and white terrier mix buried up to its neck in a hole.
