“Someone started yelling there was a fire, but the flight attendants in a very professional way told everyone to chill, it wasn’t a fire, and keep seated,” Weiner told NBC News.
In a statement to WSB-TV, Delta said that its crew followed proper procedures: “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and crew. That’s why our flight crew followed procedures to safely divert today’s flight 2846 to Albuquerque. Delta teams are working to get our customers on their way later this afternoon and we apologize for the delay in their travel plans.”
Weiner told NBC News that the plane was met by emergency crews, and that Delta arranged for a new plane to take the passengers to Los Angeles. Weiner added that Delta “ordered Chick-fil-A for everyone.”
