Sunken boat leaves oil sheen in Swinomish Channel

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Oil spilling from a sunken 71-foot fishing vessel was spreading on the surface of the Swinomish Channel, video from Chopper 7 showed on Monday.

The Coast Guard and the Department of Ecology were responding to the spill near the Twin Bridges Marina outside of Anacortes.

The Coast Guard said it contracted Global Diving and Salvage Company to contain and clean up the spill.

The Chopper 7 video showed a boom around the sunken vessel, but a sheen of oil spread from the vessel south, toward LaConner.

Divers were preparing to plug and patch the leak, the Coast Guard said, adding that there is reportedly 750 gallons of fuel on board with a total capacity of 1,100 gallons.

Swinomish Tribe Police and local volunteer fire fighters are also on scene, the Coast Guard said.
