Space Needle to celebrate 50th anniversary with retro paint job

SEATTLE — As Seattle Center celebrates the 50th anniversary of the World's Fair, the Space Needle is getting an anniversary paint job in its original color.

City officials said the roof of the 605-foot needle will be painted "galaxy gold" this week. The color is more orange than gold, so the change should be pretty noticeable in the Seattle skyline.

The fresh coat of paint will appear in time to kick off anniversary celebrations for both the Space Needle and Seattle Center on April 21. The throwback orange will remain atop the tower for the summer.

Two generations of World's Fair families will apply the first strokes of paint to the color scheme from the summer of 1962.

World's Fair Community Relations Director, C David Hughbanks, and Jeff Wright, chairman of the Space Needle and son of Howard S. Wright, the builder of the Space Needle, will participate.
