OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Port of Olympia will consider a proposal that incited violent protests the last time they tried it.
Port commissioner E.J. Zita is holding a public meeting in an unofficial capacity Thursday night to talk about the possibility of military shipments coming through the port, according to the Olympian.
The last time military shipments came through the port was in 2007. The military equipment arrived from Iraq, was brought through the Port of Olympia and then went to what is now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Those shipments, which happened during the height of the Iraq war, were greeted by protests that turned violent, leading to multiple arrests and the use of pepper spray by police.
But the port is now losing money, opening the possibility to such shipments again.
The public meeting will be held Thursday at the United Churches, 110 11th Avenue Southeast, at 5:30 p.m.
Another public meeting will be held next month.
