Man drowns while swimming in Lake Tapps

BONNEY LAKE, Wash. — Bonney Lake police say a man drowned in Lake Tapps Sunday evening.

It happened at Allan Yorke Park in Bonney Lake just before 7 p.m.

Police say the man was swimming in a designated swimming area and he was not alone.

He was in water about 12 feet deep and the water was warmer than usual.

People who saw the man swimming said he showed no signs of distress until seconds before he went under.

"He was swimming with his girlfriend, and when he was coming back, he started asking for help and a lot of witnesses saw him go under. (There was) not a lot of warning other than that,” said Todd Green with Bonney Lake police.

Witnesses were not able to find the man on the surface, nor could police officers who responded first.

It took a dive team to find him, and by that time, it's estimated he had been submerged for 20 minutes.

The man was taken from the scene by ambulance but later died.
