5 years later: Orting man's murder remains unsolved

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Five years ago on Tuesday, 53-year-old Michael Compton was found dead on his front lawn in Orting.

On Feb. 19, 2014, investigators believe Compton was shot during a struggle after he interrupted a burglary in the garage of his home in the 500 block of Ford Lane Southwest.

Police said Compton was shot in the head and was likely killed by his own gun.

Detectives found a shotgun at the scene.

Investigators have few leads and Compton's family told KIRO 7's Jessica Oh they know someone out there knows something about his death.

Daniel Compton, Michael's nephew, visits the cemetery to remember his beloved uncle.

"I shouldn't be here in the first place," said Daniel Compton. "He knew more about me than my dad did."

The only clues police had for years was surveillance video that showed two people on bikes riding past Michael Compton's home. The other clue was an e-cigarette the FBI found at the scene.

"There's supposed to be DNA on this e-cig that they really need to know who this person is," said Daniel Compton. "It bothers me really bad. It's just like pretty much.. I could taste their blood."

He never thought it was take this long to find the killer.

"I miss him very dearly, I know you're watching and I will get this solved," said Daniel Compton.

Daniel Compton and his wife are meeting with the FBI again this Friday. They hope to learn more about developments in the case.

Police have yet to make an arrest in the case and still need the public's help in identifying the person or persons responsible.
