Sky lanterns banned in unincorporated King County without permit

KING COUNTY, Wash. — The King County Fire Marshal has prohibited use of sky lanterns in unincorporated King County-- unless you have a burn permit.

Sky lanterns, or Chinese lanterns, are also prohibited during fire-safety burn bans.

The ban is a result of increasingly hot and dry weather conditions, as summer approaches this year.

According to the King County Fire Marshal, because sky lanterns have open flames, they are regulated by the International Fire Code as adopted in state law.
