Semi crash, fire blocks I-5 in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — A semi erupted in flames, snarling traffic during the morning commute after two trucks crashed on Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday, the two semis crashed on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Enchanted Parkway.

One of the semitrailers caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames. The driver of that truck was able to get out and only suffered a wrist injury. The other driver was not injured.

Several lanes of northbound I-5 were blocked as firefighters worked to put out the flames. The fire was hard to access due to the load of disposable cups in the trailer.

Eventually, firefighters were able to use a piercing nozzle to get water to the fire burning inside the trailer.

Northbound I-5 remains partially blocked and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

At 7 a.m., the backup was six miles.

All lanes were back open about 7:45 a.m.
