The Seattle police officers union has endorsed Seattle mayoral candidate Ed Murray, and that means incumbent Mike McGinn has missed another major union endorsement.
The Seattle Police Office Guild endorsement on Thursday came 10 days after the Seattle Firefighter's Union endorsed Murray, who advanced with McGinn after the august primary. The general election is Nov. 5.
This is the second time the police guild has opposed McGinn. In 2009, the group endorsed his opponent Joe Mallahan.
On Wednesday, City Councilwoman Jean Godden also backed Murray, becoming the fifth of nine councilmembers to oppose McGinn, who was elected in 2009.
"Councilmembers are typically reluctant to endorse against a sitting incumbent mayor seeking reelection," a Wednesday Murray campaign statement read, "so for a majority of the Council to endorse Murray is unprecedented in Seattle politics in recent memory."
The police endorsement of Murray is a notable setback for McGinn, who proposed the program to bring 20 police reforms in 20 months
In announcing their support of Murray, firefighter union president Kenny Stuart said he'd met with McGinn only three times in the nearly four years the mayor was in office. The mayor responded by saying his staff had met with the firefighter's union on many other occasions.
