A Seattle man has been charged with felony cyber-stalking after police say he threatened to kill a young woman he met on OKCupid.com, a free dating website run by Match.com.
Holly Mason is a senior at Seattle Pacific University, and the 21-year-old called 911 after she said Adam Carter-Campbell threatened to kill her. While Mason didn’t use her name in her profile, she realized she had posted a picture of herself in a work shirt, letting Carter-Campbell know where she was.
“You just gotta be nicer to be,” police said he wrote, “that way I won’t have the inclination to go kill a bunch of people.”
Mason said Carter-Campbell became angry after she wouldn’t return his messages.
She reported him to the website and had him banned. But police said he created a new account and went after Mason.
“I dream of a paradise where you and I can go to an island where no one can hear you scream,” he wrote. Mason, who worried he would act on his threats, showed the messages to KIRO 7.
“I didn’t know what kind of weapons he had access to,” she said. “I was worried for everyone else because he was so angry about something I did. It was more like I don’t want this on my head and I don’t want to see Seattle hurt.”
She also worried about her personal safety. He asked if they would get married if he came to her job.
Police arrested Carter-Campbell last week. They searched his apartment on Westlake Avenue and took his computers, but did not find weapons.
Carter-Campbell doesn’t have a criminal history, but police and prosecutors say he is a danger to himself and to others.
He remains at the King County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Mason said she is still on the website, but plans to be more careful about what information she posts.
