Polar Pioneer oil rig won't return to Seattle

SEATTLE — Protestors who tried to block Shell's oil rig from coming to Seattle have gotten their wish.

The Polar Pioneer is reportedly staying away from Seattle.

Currently, the Polar Pioneer is in Alaska. Shell Oil had planned on the oil rig returning to Terminal 5 in Seattle, but according to KUCB in Alaska, the arctic rig will not be coming back to Seattle.

A Shell spokesperson told the public radio station that plans for the Polar Pioneer are still being worked out.

Over the summer, kayaktivists swarmed the rig when it stopped in Seattle for some equipping work.

Protesters also tried to stop the rig from leaving for Alaska to drill for oil.

"We couldn't stop them. We knew we wouldn’t be able to stop them, but I think it was an important demonstration of people’s' intent,” said activist Dianne Shisk.

According to the Peninsula Daily News, the Polar Pioneer will head for Port Angeles.

Shell's other arctic oil rig, the Noble Discoverer, will head to the Port of Everett.

However, no timeline has been announced as to when they will arrive.

Last month, Shell announced it's giving up on drilling for oil in Alaska after spending billions of dollars to find it.
