Pedestrian hit during police chase in Greenwood

SEATTLE — A pedestrian and several vehicles, including police cars, were hit Friday evening by a driver in a stolen car in Greenwood, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police said the collision happened at 6:30 p.m. on North 73rd Street and Greenwood Avenue North.

A man stole a white Honda and an officer pursued the driver and attempted to pull over the stolen car, according to authorities.

The officer broadcasted the information of the stolen vehicle.

Officers continued their chase when the stolen vehicle made its way to the Greenwood neighborhood. During the chase, the stolen vehicle and officers were stopped in traffic, and the suspect collided into a police car.

After hitting the police vehicle, the suspect struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street.

Police said the man had a minor leg injury and was treated at the scene by Seattle Fire. He was then transported to a local hospital to be checked out.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Chris Legeros spoke with Turabi Topal, a witness, who heard and saw the crash.

“We heard a big crash sound and we just ran out,” Topal said. “He flipped almost like in the air because he hit him really hard. There’s kids and families like walking with a stroller, it was shocking.”

Topal ran out of his store after he saw the driver of the stolen car hit the police vehicle and then hit a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Police said after the pedestrian was hit, the driver of the stolen vehicle didn't stop and continued driving north where two more collisions happened at 87th Street and Greenwood Avenue.

The driver intentionally tried to run over officers in an alley and another pedestrian, according to police. The pedestrian jumped out of the way and hurt her knee.

At that point, police called off their chase.  Officers caught up with the stolen vehicle again in the Roosevelt neighborhood.

Police found it damaged with the bumper of another Seattle police car pressed against it.

Mark Jamieson of the Seattle Police Department told KIRO 7 on what happened during the other collisions.

“Where the suspect again struck a patrol car, collided with another vehicle at this intersection,” Jamieson said. “We have an adult male, he’s in his 20s, exhibiting signs of, he’s under the influence of something.”

According to police, the driver of the stolen car appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident.
