BREMERTON, Wash. — An argument between the passenger of a car and the driver of a truck turned violent as the passenger fired a shot at the truck's driver, Bremerton police said.
Police said the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday as the two vehicles were driving near the intersection of 7th and Naval streets in Bremerton. An eyewitness said the car and truck were speeding on streets throughout the neighborhood. "Came back around this way, rant the stop sign, went back down that way," Goodwin said as she gestured up and down the area where the shooting happened.
Goodwin said as she pulled her car out to leave her home, she heard gunfire. "I was on my way to the stoplight, that's when I heard the shot," said Goodwin.
A Bremerton police officer responding to a 911 call caught up with the car the bullet was fired from. Police said as he held the female driver and two male passengers at gunpoint he heard arguing and saw one man duck down, then jump from the car as another gunshot was heard.
Bremerton Police Chief Steven Strachan said the officer stayed with the two people in the car as the man ran down the street and wildly fell to the ground. "About a block away the suspect lost control as he was running and fell very hard against the pavement," Strachan said.
He was quickly taken into custody by other officers responding to the call of shots fired.
Police arrested Aaron Cloud, 29, of Port Orchard. He was charged with drive-by shooting and illegally possessing a firearm. Cloud is a convicted felon with a long history of arrests and violent incidents.
Investigators said they still aren't sure what Cloud and the truck's driver were arguing about when the shot was fired. Strachan said the door stopped the bullet, but if it hadn't, the driver may have been killed. "He's very fortunate it didn't go through the door," Strachan said.
