ONALASKA, Wash. — An old casket embedded in a creek was removed from mud -- on a private property in Onalaska, Washington on Saturday.
The property was located near the Newaukum River.
Removal of the casket revealed there was no deceased body inside. It was unknown if human remains would be found in the casket, according to officials.
The casket was found to have a particle board insert in place with a hole cut in it. Inside of the hole was a plastic bucket.
The coroner’s office said it appeared the recovered casket was the same one that had been used by a local family as a bar in their backyard.
The casket removal was used as a joint training event for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team and the Lewis County Coroner’s Office.
