New school year, new speed cameras

SEATTLE — If flashing lights in school zones don't slow you down, maybe this will.

Five more Seattle schools are now equipped with speed enforcement cameras.

Violators will be hit with a $189 fine.

Back to school also brought back old concerns for Ali Abdulaziz as he walked his son to Bailey Gatzert Elementary along busy, Yesler Way on Wednesday morning.

"When the cars driving speed I'm so scared. I'm so scared that's why I hold onto my son on the hand," said Abdulaziz.

So seeing two new, school zone speed cameras up and working gives him peace of mind.

These five Seattle public schools have the new cameras this school year:

Roxhill Elementary

Holy Family School

Dearborn Park Elementary

Bailey-Gatzert

Eckstine Middle School

Four other schools used this technology last year to spot speeders going over 20 miles an hour, the school zone speed limit, when lights are flashing or children are present.

The Seattle police department and school district told KIRO 7, more than 40,000 speeding citations were issued last year.

More than 11,000 citations were issued at Thurgood Marshall Elementary.

Broadview-Thompson had the most citations with more than 15,000.

Almost 8,000 were issued at Olympic View Elementary and 5,500 citations were issued to speeders at Gatewood Elementary.

Installing cameras cost $9,500 per school.

“We're so busy, stressed and moving fast but we need to keep and be conscious and aware of that,” said parent Nadiya Olusola. “Our children are important and we have to help prepare for their future. so it's our responsibility."

If 75 percent of the citations given out last year were paid in full, the city raked in more than $5 million.

The money is supposed to go back into school zone safety improvements, according to SPD.

Speeders at the new schools will first get a warning.

The $189 fines will start October 1.
