Man rescued after falling out of boat in Elliott Bay

SEATTLE — A man had to be rescued after he was knocked out of his boat in Elliott Bay Monday.

The man said he was knocked overboard while he was putting out a fender on the side of his boat.

The man was wearing a lifejacket and had a handheld marine radio to issue a distress call.

He was only in the water about 10 minutes before deck crews from the Washington State Ferry Wenatchee launched a high-speed rescue boat and plucked him from the water.

The ferry crew then took the man to a nearby Coast Guard vessel.
The man in his 30s was taken to Seattle Fire Station 5 where he was evaluated.  He was cold but appeared to be OK, Seattle fire said.
Because the 39-foot boat's engines were running when the man fell out, the boat hit the jetty at the Elliott Bay Marina and sank.
The Seattle fire boat secured the vessel and booms were set up to prevent any oil or fuel from leaving the scene.

The ferry's sailing to Bainbridge Island was delayed 30 minutes.
