Man charged with killing mother, stabbing father held on $1M bail

SNOHOMISH CO., Wash. — Zachary Konicke, the man charged with killing his mother, attacking his father, and setting fire to their home, will remain on a $1 million bail, a judge decided Tuesday.

Konicke, 29, appeared in court via closed circuit television as the judge told him he was facing charges of first-degree murder, assault, and arson.

New court documents reveal some of the horrifying details from Thursday night, when authorities believe he killed his mother, Vicki Konicke, and badly injured his father, Michael Konicke.

A woman’s body was found in the burned-out house, which is presumed to be that of Vicki Konicke, though it has not yet been officially identified.

Documents state Michael Konicke called 911 and said “his son Zachary had assaulted both him and his wife with several knives,” and that “he believed Zachary was ‘high on drugs.’”

When detectives interviewed Konicke at the hospital, they described him as “calm” and claimed his parents were the aggressors.

Court papers show he said “his father ‘attacked’ him, causing him to have to defend himself,” and that he said he “’stabbed’ his mother in the head, chest and leg while she ‘attacked’ him in the same way.”

The documents also provide some insight into his possible state of mind.

His brother, Alexander, told detectives that "Zachary uses 'mushrooms and ecstasy' on a regular basis" and said just two days before the fire, Konicke "shaved off all of his body hair and doused himself in gasoline."

Alexander said he found him "sitting alone in a room... making odd/paranoid statements about religion, spirits, the devil, and 'them' watching, talking and chasing him.”

Detectives said Zachary Konicke also admitted to setting the home on fire.
