Seattle police are investigating an early morning incident in South Seattle where a woman was shot and a man was stabbed, according to a release from the Seattle Police Department.

Just before 2 a.m. Thursday, patrol officers heard gunfire while on duty and began searching the area.

Around 1:59 a.m., they found a 25-year-old woman in the 9200 block of Rainier Avenue South suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

She was driving a car with two young children in the back seat, who were not physically injured.

Seattle Fire Department medics treated the woman at the scene and transported her to Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

A family member later picked up the children.

Police determined the shooting took place a few blocks north in a parking lot at an apartment complex in the 8700 block of Rainier Avenue South.

Investigators say the woman had been parked in the lot with her children when a man, wearing body armor and holding a firearm, approached her vehicle.

The two got into an argument, during which the woman stabbed the man in the leg. He responded by shooting her multiple times, according to the department.

Four minutes after officers heard the gunfire, 911 dispatchers received a call reporting a shooting in the parking lot.

Officers returned to the apartment complex and were directed to a second-floor hallway, where they found a 38-year-old man with a serious leg wound.

Officers applied a tourniquet and provided first aid before medics transported him to Harborview in critical condition.

Police believe the man found in the hallway is the same person who confronted the woman in the parking lot.

Detectives with SPD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit responded to both the scene and the hospital to gather evidence and conduct interviews.

Officers recovered a firearm and impounded the woman’s vehicle for further processing.

The investigation remains ongoing.
