UW planning Fall quarter amid coronavirus uncertainty

SEATTLE — Halfway through a spring quarter of online classes, University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce is looking toward fall.

During an online town hall Friday, Cauce said the UW is “planning for an in-person autumn quarter, but the parameters of what that means are still being developed.”

Cauce said an announcement of how the fall quarter will look could come in mid-June or early July.

“Some of our very largest lectures might be online for the lecture part and then smaller group discussions would be in person,” Cauce said of one possibility.

Cauce cautioned that any plans could change in response to the pandemic.

The coronavirus is also impacting university finances.

State revenues are drying up, and Cauce warns limited furloughs could be coming. “We’re hoping it will help us avoid layoffs later,” she said.

University officials said the cost of delivering education has gone up because of the quick switch to online courses.

Nearly 15,000 people have signed a petition calling on the UW to reduce tuition because of the switch to online classes, saying the quality of education is suffering.
