In a surprising move Tuesday, the Seattle Seahawks waived running back Christine Michael from the team, according to Adam Schefter, of ESPN.

Michael led the Seahawks with 117 carries, 469 yards and six touchdowns while starting seven of the Seahawks’ first nine games this season.

The move comes after C.J. Prosise, a rookie third-round running back from Notre Dame, had 17 carries for 66 yards and seven catches for 87 yards in the first start of his career on Sunday night’s win against the New England Patriots.

Head coach Pete Carroll also said on Monday that he expects running back Thomas Rawls to play this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles for the first time since injuring his fibula in a game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 18.

The Seahawks also have 2016 fifth-round draft pick Alex Collins on their active roster. Collins has 10 carries for 19 yards and one touchdown this season.

Michael’s roster spot could be filled by running back Troymaine Pope, a rookie undrafted free agent from Jacksonville State, who was with the Seahawks in training camp this season and who was recently signed to the practice squad after being cut by the New York Jets.

The move likely ends the Seahawks career of Michael, who was drafted by the team in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft. He was traded last September for a seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys, where he played five games before being released and joining the practice squad of the Washington Redskins.

After being released from the Redskins’ practice squad in December, he rejoined the Seattle Seahawks and started in the team’s 10-9 playoff victory against the Minnesota Vikings.
