Man arrested in connection with fatal Des Moines shooting

Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting in Des Moines on Thanksgiving Day last year.

Investigators said in a news release that 25-year-old William Holly was identified as a suspect and was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Eagan, Minnesota.

On Nov. 28, officers responded to a report of a shooting at Mount Rainer High School.

Police said an argument broke out during an annual game of pickup football. The groups separated and one left the school grounds.

Investigators said Holly returned to the school and allegedly fired several shots toward a group of people.

One of the shots struck 21-year-old Leuea Loto in the torso. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center but died from his injuries. Loto was home from College of San Mateo near San Francisco, where he played football.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our detectives.  This case was successfully resolved due to the relentless efforts of traditional professional investigative techniques and the use of cutting edge technology.   Our partnership with other agencies to include the Eagan Minnesota Police Department and the King County Prosecutors Office contributed to the success of this case.  Our staff worked especially hard to try to bring closure and justice for the victim’s family," Chief Ken Thomas said.

On Feb. 15, Holly was charged by the King County Prosecutors Office for first-degree murder, and his bail was set at $5,000,000.  In addition, Holly was wanted for a domestic violence warrant out of Minnesota with bail set at $40,000.

Holly will be booked as a fugitive in Minnesota in preparation for his extradition to King County.
