Homicide suspect injured during Tacoma police shooting charged with murder

TACOMA, Wash. — A homicide suspect who was injured during an officer-involved shooting in Tacoma last week was charged with second-degree murder.

On Aug. 13, officers spotted Dyrell Swinson'‘s car and chased him. He crashed his car and ran away.

Investigators said Swinson was wanted in connection to the killing of a 28-year-old man who was shot in the Driver Licensing Office parking lot on Yakima Avenue the day before.

Officers caught up to Swinson and shots were fired between the police and Swinson.

Swinson was struck and taken to the hospital for treatment.

A Tacoma police K-9 was shot three times and later died.

The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Swinson with second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault for firing a firearm at police officers, one count of harming a police dog and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

A warrant was issued for his arrest and he will be booked into the Pierce County Jail after he is released from the hospital, which is expected in coming days.
