GIG HARBOR, Wash. — A fire ripped through and destroyed a thrift store in Gig Harbor that benefits Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday and found the small building engulfed in flames.
Crews fought the flames at the building, along with the breezeway and a garage-type building behind it, but the flames moved fast.
Several volunteers who arrived there were filled with emotion when they saw the destruction.
"The two of us are widows. It gave us something (to do) in the morning. You have to do something. Get up in the morning and you don't sit at home, twiddle your thumbs and feel sorry for yourself. (I’ve) always had an active life. What do we do now?" said volunteer Christa Leathers.
The fire also damaged a power line, and a crew from Peninsula Light came to repair it.
A firefighter injured her knee during the fire but will be OK.
The Pierce County fire marshal will look for the cause of the fire.
