During distracted driving month, WSP reminds drivers that ‘one text, one call can wreck it all’

April is distracted driving awareness month.

“Distracted driving is one of those violations that put us all at risk,” said Washington State Patrol Captain Ron Mead.

The U.S. Department of Transportation says distracted driving comes in many forms, from adjusting the radio or GPS, to applying makeup to eating and drinking.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington saw a 17% increase in the number of traffic fatalities in 2021.

Of the 670 traffic deaths, over 260 were caused by drunken drivers — an increase of 24% from 2020 to 2021.

“Yes, this is a national problem, but it also affects everybody right here in Washington state. No one is immune from the dangers of distracted driving, so please remember one text, one call can wreck it all,” said Mead.

Steve Kiefer’s son tragically died in 2016 due to a distracted driver.

“It’s absolutely horrific. I spend every day thinking of Mitchel and trying to honor his legacy by eliminating distracted driving, and unfortunately, we see all the numbers increase each year,” said Kiefer.

As numbers continue to climb, nationwide law enforcement agencies are devoted to bringing attention to the issue.

That’s why for the ninth year, NHTSA is launching the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign.

“Focus on the road and the drivers around you. Get everything settled before you start driving,” said Mead.
