What’s the most memorable story you’ve ever covered? There are several stories that come to mind, but at the top would be covering the Byhalia Pipeline in Memphis, TN. This was one of Memphis’ most controversial environmental issues. The 49-mile pipeline was scheduled to go from the Valero oil refinery in Memphis to Byhalia, Mississippi. It would run through low-income Black communities, many worried the pipeline could contaminate Memphis’ underground water system. I covered this story throughout my two years in Memphis, talked with many residents, activists, city and state officials, as well as Valero. Another big story I covered was the Pervis Payne resentencing trail, which gained national attention. I was in the courtroom when the judge granted Payne, a former death row inmate eligibility for parole. 5. What are you most proud of in your career in news? As a first generation Mexican American I am proud to connect with the Hispanic community, and making sure their voice is heard, and represented. 6. What’s something people don’t know about you?
