OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is taking over an investigation into the death of an inmate housed at the Thurston County Jail.

On Sept. 7, around noon, an inmate was found unresponsive at the jail. It’s unclear if they were in a cell or in a more open area.

Corrections deputies and on-site medical staff tried to save the inmate’s life, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Thurston County Coroners’ Office will determine the cause of death.
