SEATTLE — A center for perinatal bonding, the first of its kind on the West Coast, recently opened in Seattle.

The Center for Perinatal Bonding and Support is an extension of Swedish Medical Center.

The brand new center will help pregnant and postpartum women with mood and anxiety disorders.

It's focused entirely on mom and baby and is designed for women who need care beyond outpatient services but don't meet inpatient requirements.

The center offers a partial hospitalization day program for mothers and their newborns.

"Without intensive treatment, many moms find that they struggle at home, at work and in their personal relationships," Dr. Tanya Sorensen, maternal fetal medicine specialist and executive director of women's health at Swedish, said in a release. "There is even risk for chronic psychiatric illness and sometimes suicidal thoughts and behavior. We aim to better serve and support these women and their babies with the hope they will build a stronger bond as a result."

Offerings at the center include:

  • Group, individual and family psychotherapy
  • Support for mother-baby bonding and connection
  • Medical evaluation and management for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers
  • Health education on topics like coping skills, transition to motherhood, grief and loss, caring for a baby or young child, and relaxation and mindfulness
