Residents teamed up with the City of Burien to fight the FAA over airplane noise and won, at least so far.
Neighbors noticed an increase in airplane noise last summer and say the FAA started diverting jet propeller planes from Sea-Tac to the west over Burien, when take-off was to the north.
Residents complained about the "New Route" and said the lower flying jet propeller planes were noisy over Burien parks, schools, neighborhoods, and other noise-sensitive areas. They were also concerned the FAA had not studied the environmental impact.
Neighbors formed a group called the Quiet Skies Coalition and worked with the city to push the FAA to eliminate the "New Route".
The city hired aviation attorneys in San Francisco who filed a Petition for Review in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
This week the City of Burien received a letter from the FAA saying it would stop automatically sending propeller-driven aircraft over Burien.
