American flags placed at 5,000 veterans' headstones at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery this Memorial Day

SEATTLE — A visually striking Memorial Day Ceremony takes place every year at the Evergreen Washelli Cemetery in North Seattle.

Starting at 7 a.m., hundreds of people placed American flags in front of more than 5,000 headstones.

This annual Memorial Day tradition is now in its 94th year.

“They are taking a moment in time, a snapshot in time, to remember that every life that’s represented here, they are willing to give their lives to our country and the freedom we have,” said Scott Sheehan, General Manager of Evergreen Washelli Cemetery.

Among those taking part in the flag placing event is Carmen McDonald and her family. Her husband is a US Coast Guard officer and she had family members who served in the Navy, Marines and Army.

“These people were selfless to the absolute end,” said McDonald. “They made our country better and their sacrifice is why my children get to do what they get to do.”

A number of  Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and local students took part in Monday's event.

Retired Air Force officer Jared Call brings his three boys to the cemetery every Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

“It’s a great time to remember the service others have given to our country,” said Call. “We try to focus on the real meaning of Memorial Day.”

All of the veterans buried at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, just off Highway 99, have ties to Washington.

Some were born here. Others have called this state home after retiring from service.

The cemetery will keep these flags up for several weeks, depending on the weather, so loved ones who don't get to the cemertery Monday will be able to come pay their respects.
